A Couple Days at Sea

Day 4 — At Sea

One can do as little or as much as one wants on a sea day. We opt for some activities and try to fit in a nap. 😴  Today we ate too much, played cards — we played a few games with one of the couples from dinner, watched some karaoke, lounged on deck, played trivia, and tried to win a bottle of champagne.  







After dinner we ended the night at the comedy club. They have a few decent comedians on board; pretty entertaining. 

Day 5 — At Sea

After breakfast and before it got too busy we played a round of miniature golf and “took a go” at the water slides. They were fast … or we are getting old. 🤣







While we had a headwind yesterday that made it a little too windy up on deck, today is a picture perfect South Pacific Ocean day — a nice gentle breeze, sunny, and comfortably warm. 

After lunch we played trivia. At about 2:00PM we sailed past Willis Island — a very small, coral island that has a manned weather station. It wasn’t very exciting, but the day continued to be gorgeous. 





After the Willis Island sail-by we participated in the corn hole challenge — about 30 people gave it a go. Kristi made it into the final round with 5 others, but her run ended there. 



After a nap we headed out for a drink and to listen to music before dinner. 



The sunset tonight was beautiful. 



While the food is still nothing to rave about, we did have the opportunity to have kangaroo as an appetizer. It could have been beef for all we know. 🤣



We ended the evening in the theater — they had a Newlywed-like game, pretty entertaining.

Airlie Beach and Great Barrier Reef

For some reason we are waking up very early the last few days. The advantage is that today we got to see a most spectacular sunrise. The crack of dawn, which included a crescent moon, was actually better than the sun peeking over the horizon.  Today we split up to do different activities, even though it’s not our preferred way to do things. We both originally booked the snorkeling trip at the Great Barrier Reef. Unfortunately, Kristi suffers from pretty severe sea sickness when on a small boat. She doesn’t do well even on the short ride into port from the ship. The reef trip is 1 1/2 — 2 hours each direction. As much as she wanted to go today she knew she’d likely be miserable the whole time.  So, Jim left at about 9am for the day-long trip and Kristi embarked on a walking tour of Airlie Beach.  The boat to the reef picked up about 120 passengers directly from the ship (it’s anchored just off shore). Cruising Back to Sydney

The final two days are at sea as we sail south back to Sydney. Carnival does do a good job of having lots of activities of every kind. You can do as little or as much as you want.  Day 8 — At Sea We were able to sleep in a little longer this morning. After coffee and putting the absolute final touches on our model ship, we had breakfast, played trivia, learned how to make towel animals, played cards, and had a little lunch.  Each day at sea at about noon Captain Mario comes on the PA to give a navigation update — he is fun to listen to: great Italian accent and quite exuberant.  He mentioned that we were moving along at 19 knots, which is not slow. We left Airlie Beach well after our scheduled time, sometime after 8pm. We heard that a passenger gashed his foot open pretty badly on rocks on shore. The gossip was they were deciding whether to wait or leave him to get better medical attention. We don’t know what the decision was, but we think we are moving fast today to make...

Arrival on Taveuni

After a smooth 11-hour flight from LA to Nadi, Fiji we got through customs and made our connecting flight to Taveuni. That flight was on a plane that carried 18 passengers but there were only ten of us for the morning flight. It was very smooth.  They weighed each of us for the flight on the tiny plane. 😂 We hardly could have imagined what today would hold. After arriving on Taveuni we met the family we are staying with. We took a nap, took a walk, and spent some time singing and talking about roosters and Fijian culture with Nita, the son. Later in the day I helped Nita harvest and plant taro and cassava — you know we often take the road less traveled.  Before dinner we went with Nita to meet the Elder-Chief of the village and drink kava — it’s traditional to do so when visiting a Fijian village.
